An Ode to Black Hair

After seeing so much weave and ugly pieces of synthetic on many of my poor sistahs hair i just reminisce a lot about the good ole days and i am talking about the 90's and to be exact 1992 was the year when the revolution of the black hair began. I love sistahs who are bold enough to wear that short hair with pride and i get to see their bone structures, high cheek bones, rosey cheeks, Long necks or layered necks and unfortunately a few scars from that curling iron on the back of their neck but who cares cos it will heal in a few weeks (Thanks to that Melanin) . I don't know who was first in the short hair Revolution but its a toss between Haile Berry and Toni Braxton and soon after yeah the term chicken heads with sex appeal came up but i don't see them as chicken heads i see them as Beautiful Bold and Brave Sistah and only the poor negroes who have been brainwashed that beautiful has something to do with the length of a females hair. I wish that time will come back when women had more pride in their short kinky or nappy hair or even permed short hair (At least it was natural). Now we live in a fiasco where most sistahs i see out nowadays look like hookers from the 80's with bad taste. There is nothing worse than having a lady over and you want to recreate a romantic evening with her on the couch and you are sipping wine together and acting all sophisticated and talking about World Politics and just like they do in the movies you reach out to her and slowly run your hand thru her hair and ALAS!!!!!!!!!! she got CORNROWS!!! underneath her long jet black Indian hair that touches her behind and all of a sudden the mood changes and you are like damn you could have told me that earlier that that was just a weave on. Nowadays thanks to all the numerous weaves out there we have more cases of pets choking on hair in the emergency vet hospital or more plumber visits because the synthetic hair has clogged up our bathrooms and toilets and our vaccums only last a few months before we replace them because the numerous fake hair in them.
I know there are some men who have identity crisis and issues with their sexuality that makes it impossible for them to date women with shorter hair because it reminds them of that inner urge that they are trying to suppress about really being with boys/men but for a real man short hair is a thing of pride because it takes a lot of emphasis away from hair which really is a form of dead skin and accentuates the other parts of the pretty human face. Besides if a woman is ugly with no hair then guess what she is still gonna be ugly with long hair. the only difference is the Korean Store owner who she made richer.
I know its the beyonce era of fake everything but i know deep down there are some deep sistahs out there who are yearning for the revolution of the SHORT BLACK HAIR.

Peace.

You made a serious assumption that so many other people make " I love sistahs who are bold enough to wear that short hair with pride" Black women are capable of having long hair you know, I'm on a forum for black hair care with 44,000 members and there are a ton of bra strap length, mid back length and waist length haired women. There are even a few with hair on their way to their butts.

It seems you're under the assumption if a sistah loses the synthetic pieces then the only option she has to rock is natural or relaxed...just short. **shakes head**

Short hair is short for a lot of black women because of improper hair care education, that's it, nothing else. Our hair grows and it's a problem for many to maintain the length, and that's where braids and weaves come in as an option for some to give their hair a rest and grow it out.

Now I understand what you are saying about the weave, and I honestly don't know how brothas do it. But the ones who wear a weave because they are just clueless and JUST HAVE TO have long hair all of the time sadden me compared to the ones who use it as a growth aid to give their hair a break. Check out Reneice she's famous in MD for her hair care practices and weaves to help women grow their hair out http://www.reniece.com/

As for Beyonce and other black women in entertainment there is no choice. The amount of styling, cutting, colouring, straightening etc would definitely take it's toll to the point where 99.9% of black entertainers wear lace fronts and weaves. I would too because they wouldn't be touching my hair either, it would be over. It's either that or do what they do to a lot of black models they either go Naomi Campbell or Alek Wek And White, Latin and Asian women [famous and otherwise] also wear pieces ALL THE TIME as well, it's not just a black thing.

When i wrote the blog a while back i guess i was more fascinated with the short hair wearing sistah, Truly i didnt know about sistahs who wore their hair natural and long who were not mixed with other races so pardon me on that but you get my drift about natural hair without any poisonous chemical.

I dont buy the cop out you gave for beyonce. I figured you was going to defend her because you like her just like nearly every other woman who follows trends and fads but i disagree. That is the problem with our community because unfortunately she is a role model to young black girls whether we like it or not and we all know she should not be a spokesperson to the young black youth and neither should the likes of Naomi Campbell. I hope someone like Alicia Keys will get more focus cos i think she does a better job than Beyonce who i believe is a reincarnate of Diana Ross who is just a slave to entertainment or a modern day minstrel.

I guess coming from Africa i never grew to know any black woman with straight black hair that was natural and there werent a bunch of African women who looked liked that naturally. I was used to women in braids and plats and thats the beauty i know unlike the western world beauty where it seems like the black hair and black woman is trying to be a white version of european beauty which is nothing to be proud of just like worshipping the christian/white God.

Re: Beyoncé. First and foremost DO.NOTASSUME and lump me into a category that you think worships the Knowles clan. I'm not a fan/stan or cheer in her corner for that matter. And I for one am not a trend or fad follower in fashion, music or opinion. I like what I like because I like it.

Now that's out of the way, I stated an entertainment industry FACT that women of all colours wear hair pieces and extensions to protect their hair. My reponse to your blog post was hardly a cop out. Rather than reading it for what it was you took it upon yourself to assume a diehard Beyoncé fan was sticking up for her just for the sake of it. Make note and off topic I've been a diehard Mariah Carey fan since I was 11 years old and from my mother to an entertainer I will praise and critique where necessary. Nobody gets a pass from me, just because I may like em or love em.

Have you seen what goes on backstage in modelling shoots, fashion shows? If Beyonce or any other black celebrity for that matter wore their natural hair whilst promoting and performing, they would have chewed up, broken off hair by now or worser still, bald. Are you telling me you've never seen an awards show and seen a performer in one hairstyle on the red carpet, another on stage and another pictured at the after show party? Do you know what goes into achieveing the perfect curl, long straight locks, or bumped ends?? Heat, heat, and more heat, hairspray, fine toothed combs, colour treatments, relaxers, more heat, styling products which equals breakage, breakage, breakage. Day after day after day. If I were beyonce, Mariah or Christina I'd be wearing a lace front too or hair pieces [as they do]. My hair is too precious to be dyed, fried and laid to the side like that.

It's a combination of image and protection when it comes to hair care choices as an entertainer. Beyoncé n dem can't prance on stage singing crazy in love with their hair in a bun and a scrunchie. The lace front wig works fine for what she's doing and how often she's doing it. I don't particularly care for Christina Aguilera either but you better believe she wears hair pieces too. Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Britney Spears, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Aniston, Nelly Furtado, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott. Black, White and Hispanic. Naomi Campell will go the weave route to protect her hair because she doesn't want her own hair butchered doing 3 fashions shows in a day, and she's not the only one. You claim to be a male fashionista ever seen the signature Versace hairstyle, the jet black gothic look fron Dior and Galliano? There are not 20 plus models who have the same exact hairstyle, they too don pieces and wigs for a uniform look for a show. And that WAS MY POINT from the beginning, which I think has been missed entirely, extensions, hair pieces, lace front wigs etc are donned by just as many non blacks these days as ever before, and for a lot of women it's a hair rest to help grow their hair out with daily manipulation.

The other option they seem to give black models is a weave or shave it all off like Alek to stop the hair damage before it starts and because the stylists have no idea about black hair and how to handle it. I'm not even taking it there with a colour and European issue. My post was written from the perspective with extensive haircare knowledge and not one about European influence in the african diaspora and hair choices or who's a better entertainer or deserves more props between Alicia [who has always worn pieces and wigs] and Beyonce. I commend them on both for being successful and anyone in the industry black or white is a minstrel as far as I'm concerned. The only one with balls to take a stand and take 100% ownership of their shit and try and get out of the minstrel show is Prince...but those are a whole 'nother subject entirely.

As for Africa, well they seem to have their own issues without Western influence with the aid of 2 and 4% hydroquinone. Don't think it's all the West that are trying to get all Euro with their look now!

That's all for now.

Actually thanks to Rihanna(she pulled a Halle Berry coup) short hair is making it's come back and even Beyonce had to pull Sasha Fierce off the stage and into the magazines to try and reclaim some of the stolen thunder.

Don't worry you will see more necks and cheeks...even some burn marks but at the same time some sistah will not relinquish those purchased locks.

Ummm i'm totally with LondonDiva on this issue. 1) I hate this afro-centric theory that black women have to have "short nappy hair", or balled or cut off or what have you and they are considered natural. No, that's considered a mess! 2)Our hair comes in all kinds of different hair types...kinky, curly, wavy, etc. and if you study it, we were origianlly known to have really long thick hair. That's how we were supposed to be portrayed. Now, that truth and the knowledge of how to take care of our hair and our original climate got lost somewhere along the Atlantic when we were brought over here in ships. However, as LondonDiva stated, there are many, many women who have now learned proper hair care and are growing their own hair to extremely long lengths. And for the record, Beyonce and Diana have very thick and lengthy, natural hair.
